Search Engine Optimization - Should You Use Search Engines Cloaking To Get The Top Spot?

What is cloaking?

Search engine cloaking is a process where you attract traffic by cheating the search
engines. You have two pages to display – one for the search engine and one that you
show to the surfer; one page is hidden in the other – hence the term 'cloaking'.
Since the 'cloaked' page is highly keyword optimized, if it goes undetected by
the search engine, it would help in capturing a very high ranking for the website.

Why you should avoid cloaking?

Cloaking, if you look at it, is a shortcut method to get a higher ranking. As every
dirty SEO tactic, if it succeeds to dodge the tests of the search engine, it would
benefit the website greatly. However, this is rare. The search engines today,
like Google, are well equipped to identify cloaking efforts and when found out,
the search engine usually blacklists the website.

The risk is too much when compared to the benefit. Moreover, when there are so many other
ways to optimize your website. It is a very bad idea to use such dirty tricks and tactics
that may jeopardize your website investment.

When it was first initiated, it was a good idea, however, today – no matter how well
it is disguised, the search engines will catch and penalize the offenders.

If your website is blacklisted by any of the major search engines, your business website
will disappear from the Net for the simple reason that it will not reach the result pages
anymore.

Even if you are a large and well established website, you cannot afford to be blacklisted
by a major search engine. If you are new, this is pure suicide.

Hence, the best is to avoid cloaking and use Ethical search engine optimization methods
to boost your website traffic.

How To Find Keywords And Use Them In SEO I

You have your website and need to know how to find keywords and use them in SEO on your site. In fact, you use keywords on more than websites, but let's stick to these for the moment. There are two parts to this question: first, how to find keywords, and second, how to use them.

You have a few ways of finding good keywords, and it all starts with the theme of your site. Let's assume, for argument sake, that your site is all about dogs. You want to get your dog site high in the search engine listings, and to make it easier, let's assume that the search engine is Google. It doesn't have to be, but that is probably the best known and the easiest to take as an example, rather than keep referring to 'search engines'.

The first aspect of Google you must understand is that they list individual web pages. Every page on your website is listed, or not listed, separately. Your home page can be listed below a minor page, though not necessarily for the same search, since the second aspect of Google is that every search term that Google visitors use to find what they are looking for has a different index of web pages, and so produces different results.

For example, if you searched for dog collars (canine type), you would get a set of results, ten on each page. If you then searched for furry dog collars, you would get another set of results. Some pages that were listed under the first search might also be listed in the second, but not necessarily so. Each different search term can provide different results, and the other name for a search term is a 'keyword'. That's right. That's basically what a keyword is: the words used by somebody searching for information on a search engine.

Building Your Online Business Around Your Knowledge

It is much easier to build your online business around what you already know. Let's say that you know a lot about computers. Wouldn't it make sense to build your online business around that knowledge? The fact that you already know a lot about computers makes you an authority on that subject right from the start.

Because Internet surfers are very skeptical about almost everything that they read or buy makes being an authority on a subject a must. Knowing what you are talking about on a particular subject will go a long way in gaining their trust. Trust leads to converting your product to sales.

Being knowledgeable will help make running your online business go a lot smoother. Because you already know a lot about the subject that you are promoting, it will be a lot easier to create a content rich website. You won't have to take the time to research your subject matter because you already know it, which will allow you to concentrate on making money, which is why we all build our online businesses in the first place.

Trying to build your website around a subject that you know little or nothing about will make it a lot more difficult to run. You may find after you have put a lot of work, time, and money, into it that you are just not knowledgeable enough to make your online business work. You may end up giving up altogether. That's the last thing that you want to do.

Having great knowledge of a particular subject will make you feel more confident, and comfortable, with what you are doing. You will enjoy running your online business a lot more if you know what you are doing. There's no sense in running your own business if you are miserable doing it. You can get that result working for someone else.

So, build your online business around your knowledge. It will be a lot easier to run and will be a lot more successful opposed to building one about something that you know nothing about.

Website Traffic - How To Get The Best Targeted Traffic

If you've been online for any amount of time you've probably realised that having a great looking and functioning website isn't the end of your internet marketing journey. Without traffic to your site you won't make any sales and even the 'wrong type of traffic' will just get you a lot of visitors.

What is really required is to get specific types of visitors to your site and then you can watch the sales roll in. But what are these specific types of visitors and how do you get them.

To answer the first part of the question you must set up the landing pages of your site with particular types of people in mind. You may for example want to target someone who is brand new to internet marketing. What would be the point of talking about advanced linking strategies?

Your landing page should therefore talk about getting things set up in the right way. Think that makes sense – you'd be amazed how many webmasters ignore this fundamental point!

To get the best targeted traffic though is going to require some work. Without doubt article marketing can quickly and easily provide the right type of traffic for your site if you write your articles in the correct way.

Again this is logical. As in the above example you would write about some aspect of 'making sure your first site is set upright' and submit it to the article directories. Someone reading this article and then clicking through to your site will then be presented with further information on what they had read.

Surely that's the best targeted traffic that you can get?

What is the Most Effective Way to Get Traffic for a Confused Beginner?

There are so many different traffic programs and traffic scams out there that it is really hard to keep them all straight.

The bottom line is, no matter how much traffic you get, if it is not targeted to your niche, it is pretty much useless. That is why most traffic programs do not work, and it is why most guaranteed traffic is a complete waste of money.

There are a few things that bring in traffic:

1) Articles you write and publish (for proof, go to ezinearticles.com, go to the expert authors page, and see that I now have 1007 articles published – trust me, if it did not work, I wouldn't write an average of 5000 words per day, every day.

2) Traffic you get by swapping emailings with other marketers. Unfortunately, if you do not already have at least 2000 subscribers, you are not going to get many takers on that. So you probably cannot use that source of traffic yet.

3) Traffic you get from Google Adwords. The only bad thing about it is that you have to do a lot of testing before you figure out which keywords, which ads, and which squeeze pages work best for you with Adwords – and it can easily cost you $2000 in clicks before you figure it out – so if you don't have $2000 you can risk losing, it is not even an option. If you do choose to go that route, buy one of Perry Marshalls' books.

The bottom line is, for a beginner – use article marketing. Hands down, it is the best way for a beginner or an intermediate (anybody making less than $10,000 per month online) to get traffic.

RSS – Taking It To The People

If you are business blogging (b-blogging) you are likely finding Real Simple Syndication (RSS) an informational bonus for you in developing knowledge-based content for your blog or website.

In reality you have participated in the successful marketing of someone else's blog. Obviously this is good news for the blog you are gleaning information from, but it can also be a positive lesson for you as well.

Let's follow this line of thinking to its logical conclusion.

1) An online business developed a blog in an effort to drive consumers to their online business.

2) You visited the blog and found the information useful.

3) You sign up for an RSS feed so you are made aware of new content when it is posted.

4) You routinely link to the blog you visit because it has great material your readers would be interested in.

5) That business receives additional visits because your blog readers trust you enough to accept your recommendation of the material.

If you are b-blogging without incorporating an RSS feed there are many potential visitors who are left in the dark about the potential of your blog. An RSS feed can act as a mini press release. The notice is sent to a group of individuals interested in any new information you may have available.

I have always spoken highly of the use of a press release, and an RSS feed is an online equivalent for a more specific and motivated group of consumers. Certainly they are interested first in the information you can provide, but there will be a certain consumer conversion rate that may be attributed to your willingness to offer an RSS feed.

You can also consider an RSS feed a means of directing potential customers to your own 'publication'. In an interesting twist, the marketing of your online store through blogging or knowledge-based content has made it possible for you to become an actual publisher of valued content.

Publishing is no longer an elusive genre reserved for the gifted or fortunate. You can effectively use your time, talent and passion to create a blogging publication that can gain a substantial readership. While this is important in and of itself it is not simply a matter of playing into your own personal interests, it should be called what it actually is – crucial marketing. The same concept applies to new site content you make available.

This strategy is not simply for those who are more established or have a bigger name. As an online company you have the ability to take your message to the people using an RSS feed – and they might just love you for it.

3 Ideas That Will Make You Thousands Of Dollars Online

One would think that Internet marketing has become saturated as thousands and thousands of people are joining in every single day in the hope of easy money...

Well, it soon turns out that it's not just quite so easy as they thought. Don't get me wrong... once you know what you're doing it actually is easy, but for a beginner it's -- in most cases -- an impossible task.

So... what makes the difference... what do the successful Internet marketers understand and what the unsuccessful ones don't?

Here are the three things that successful marketers do consistently:

1.) They sell their own quality products

Creating a quality product isn't very hard nowadays. In fact, almost all the gurus outsource 99% of all their work.

What can be considered a product?

Well, it can be anything. It can be an ebook, it can be software, can be a recording, a video, a membership site, etc.

If you're an expert in any field, then it's very advisable that you create your product around your area of expertise. If you aren't, you can still do your own research, or hire someone to do it for you. There are many places online that let you do just that very cheap.

Note that services from such successful marketers come very expensive, if you can even get them. All of them focus on creating an automatic stream of income and then move to creating the next and so on. Successful Internet marketers are really project managers. They direct the development and marketing of their product, but the actual work is usually done by people they hire...

Well, that's probably NOT what you wanted to read here, is it? Don't worry, not many of these marketers started like this. They got their initial funds from their off-line work or by creating and selling the products themselves. They educated themselves in the field of Internet marketing and almost all of them were furiously buying every single ebook, book, course and so on that they could get their hands on.

What discriminates them from the vast majority of other people is that they took action! They quickly understood that there's no such thing as easy money or free lunch -- you have to do something in order to get something. So, if you're guilty of chasing "the next opportunity", then stop it and start building an online business -- in the long run you'll be rewarded.

2.) They build huge lists of customers and prospects they can sell to again and again and again...

This is where these gurus use affiliate marketing. They sell their own product, have their own affiliates bringing them in new customers and leads and they are just sitting back and finding their lists get bigger and bigger every day...

And so they send emails to their customers and prospects with affiliate links to other people's products, earning a commission each time someone makes a purchase -- they can do this again and again and again... This is where affiliate marketing gets fun.

Why go through the trouble of finding new customers all the time when you can make more money with countless back-end sales? And gurus also realize this: "The moment you stop actually trying to help your customers to get what they want, you condemn yourself to failure!". It's not just me, me, me... you have to actually care!

To pull this off very successfully, you need to be consistent at quality of the products and support.

3.) They know that the crucial element online is trust...

What's the single most important reason people don't buy from you online?

You got it -- they don't trust you! Think about it. How many times you actually didn't have the money to buy something you wanted online? Sure, for a person to buy something, he or she must first want it (or be made aware that he/she wants it). And then, they have to have the money to buy it from you.

But guess what... the vast majority of targeted people that come to your web site want what you offer and have the money to buy it... only they don't trust your site enough to buy it.

So... the last thing gurus are very good at (or outsource the best people in this field) is marketing. Heck, it IS called Internet marketing, isn't it?

Marketing and copywriting are here to make the people feel trust and to be inclined to buy your product (or service for that matter). Gurus always pay professionals to do their web site graphics and usually overall design too (unless they are experts in graphics and design). Since they are marketers, many of them write their own web copy, but for the more important projects, they hire professional copywriters.

What are some ways to increase perceived credibility of the site?

a.) Get some seals (trust-e, better business bureau...). Associate your site with recognisable and trusted brands, such as Amazon.com, PayPal, Verisign... Make sure your site actually has something to do with those sites, though.

b.) Have your graphics and design look professional. You can have this done for $97, why not invest so little for such a great difference in sales?

c.) Avoid obvious hype. People are getting tired of it and frankly, when someone buys a hyped up product, they are usually disappointed and they don't buy from you again -- which violates the second thing gurus do to succeed!

Now... what did we learn through this article?

In order to be very successful online, it's important to sell your own products, build lists of customers and prospects that you can sell to again and again, and to be able to convey as much trustworthiness through your web site as possible. If you can get these three things done, I guarantee you'll soon be making thousands of dollars a month just from Internet marketing.

SEO and 4 Others - The Foundations of Increased Web Site Traffic

There's a simple idea in the world of online business that everyone agrees with: more people see your web site = more potential customers = more business.

But beyond this simple point, agreement among internet know-hows tends to go out the window. Almost every webmaster has an opinion on the best way to increase web site traffic – and surprisingly, not many of them agree.

There are probably many reasons for this lack of agreement. But of the many, there are two unquestionable big ones. The first reason most online advice-givers don't agree on how to increase web site traffic is that there's not one perfect way to go about it. Web site traffic can be successfully improved in a handful of different ways.

The second reason, as you've probably noticed, is that most people giving advice have something they'd like to sell you. They want to sell you a solution and their advice needs to be related to what they're selling.

Whether or not these sales people have your best interest in mind is open to question. But what's not open to question, is the fact that there ARE many different ways to increase website traffic.

And of these many ways, there are 5 that have a history of being very reliable and effective. Not only do these 5 methods have a high performance record, but at least one of these five is essential for anyone that wants to have a regular flow of new customers to their web site. And the good news is, 4 of the 5 methods can be done with little or no money.

If you're serious about bringing more traffic to your website - and tired of wading through online advice - take some time to consider these 5 time-tested ways before you invest another minute:

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – This is probably the most recommended way to increase web site traffic. And for good reason: it works. Having your website atop search engines like Google and Yahoo! is a sure fire way to bring people to your site. Where this method often gets confusing is in the number of different ways that people suggest doing it. Some tell you to use your keywords often in the text of your web page. Some tell you to put your keyword phrase in the alternate text of your images. Others tell you that the key to a high search-engine ranking is to have other related sites link to your site. And all of this advice is correct. There are other steps to take as well, but the problem is, not many sites give you all of the needed steps in an organized way. I've included a link below with a detailed explanation of all of these steps.

2. Newsletters – A newsletter is nothing more than a series of pre-written e-mails that are sent to people who request them from a form on your web site. There are a few tools, like auto responders, that help make this task easy and efficient. Newsletters are a very powerful because they give you an opportunity to build credibility and make repeat customers out of the customers you already have.

3. Article Directories – Article directories are websites that take submitted articles and store them in a data base so online magazines and newsletters can use them for publication. The exchange that takes place is this: you write an article and allow any website to publish your article. In return, they are obliged to leave your name and e-mail address in the byline of the article. When your article is published online, a link to your site is also published, and potential customers who read your article are likely to come see your website. If your article is published in multiple online sources, a link to your site is also published in multiple online sources. A well written article can be picked up over and over again. In the end, you'll have a regular source of new customers without spending anything more time than it takes to write the article.

4. Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC) – PPC advertising, like search engine optimization, is also a very talked-about way of bringing traffic to a site. The idea here is that search engines advertise your business web site; and you pay a particular fee each time someone clicks on your link and comes to your site. All of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have PPC advertising programs. Depending on the market you're selling to, PPC can be a very profitable way to bring interested customers to your site. On the down side, it's the only one of these five ways that is sure to take some kind of money investment.

5. Improving Your Website – This sounds very basic but it's often overlooked. It does not do a lot of good to bring potential customers to your website if your site is not ready to serve them. Any profitable website needs to be attractive, easy-to-use, and professional. Making sure your site has all three of these traits will go a long way towards making the most of the people that do see your site.

By taking some time to consider the 5 methods above, you'll not only be familiar with the 5 most proven ways to increase traffic. But you'll also have a way to measure and organize the other traffic-increasing advice you find online.

In the end, making an informed effort to increase website traffic is never a bad idea. It can lead to better business exposure. It can lead to huge increases in customers. And it will definitely lead you to more profitable and productive online business.

Ten Tips for Developing a Successful Linking Building Program

As you go about developing a strategy for increasing traffic to your Internet business website, you will want to keep in mind the ten tips for link building and best practice associate with link building. Through this article, you are provided with those ten top tips associated with link building and with the best practice in link building today. Of course, there are other tips and pointers that can be helpful to you. However, these basic tips will be fundamental to getting a solid inbound link building program in place.

1. Have a great website.

Before you start any sort of inbound link building program, make sure that your own website is as good -- as great -- as it can be. Make sure that you have an attractive, functional and user friendly website in place and in operation before you begin a link building campaign.

2. Link with high traffic websites.

When it comes to link building, look to link your website with other websites that already have high traffic. The net result, the end result of any link building campaign is to attract more traffic to your own site. And, you've a far better chance of doing this if you link with websites that do have high traffic.

3. Look for sites that invite links.

Some websites actually invite other sites to place links on their sites. Provided these websites meet your other criteria, consider linking up with sites that actually do want to place a link to your website on their venue.

4. Improve your search engine rankings independent of link building.

As you go about crafting a link building program, use other methods of increasing and improving you search engine rankings as well. You do not want to put all of your eggs into one basked. Moreover, some sites will be more apt to allow you to place a link on those sites if your own site rankings are solid.

5. Link only with quality sites.

Make sure that you only link with quality sites. A site that links to your site will reflect on your website -- and you want that reflection to be positive.

6. Make sure a linked site is relevant.

Make sure that any website that contains a link to your website is a website that is relevant to your own venue. A link to your site on an irrelevant site really will not be greatly helpful to you.

7. Check out how many quality inbound links a site already has in existence or in place.

Pay attention to how many quality inbound links a particular site you are considering placing a link on actually has at this time. Search engines sometimes do consider inbound links to a site that you are linking with when it comes to determining your own website search engine rankings.

8. Limit Reciprocal links.

Try as you can to limit reciprocal or other outbound links at your own website. You do not want people linking through to your own website only to link out again and go somewhere else. You want people to stay at your website long enough to buy your products or to engage your services.

9. Follow up in regard to inbound links with regularity.

Take the time to check on inbound links to your site from time to time to make sure that they are functional and to make certain that the websites at which these inbound links to your own website are locate continue to meet your needs and requirements.

10. Make sure your website information remains current.

Finally, make sure that the information and materials at your own website remains current and up to date. Make sure that your own website remains functional, in fine form and user friendly.

Resell rights run from the simple right to resell an item to others to the more flexible rights that let you change an item, give it a new name, and other rights. Every one of these rights can be purchased. Below is an overview of the basic kinds of reseller rights.

1) Give Away Rights

This allows you to give an item to others as long as you don't charge them anything for it.

2) Royalty Rights

These rights are similar to that given to authors and publishers. Every time you sell an item, you have to give a certain percentage of the money earned to the original owner..

3) Resell Rights

These rights not only give you permission to sell the item to anyone you wish, but you keep all money made on the sale.

4) Basic Resell Rights

With these types of rights, you again keep all money made from the sale. You have permission to sell the item, but whoever buys it from you is not allowed to sell it.

5) Private Label Rights

This is the most flexible kind of resell rights. With these, you can put your own name on an item as if it was yours to start with. You can change it, rename it and claim it as your own. You also have complete control over its sale and what rights you prefer to sell it with, if any.

6) Master Resell Rights

With this type of right whomever you sell a product to has the ability to turn around and sell it to someone else. The unique aspect of these rights is that they are separate from the product and can be sold alone or attached to the individual product.

The above shows the great variety available in resell rights. If you take the time to learn about each of these, you have opened up yet another avenue for earning money.

E-commerce: It Is Not Easy

I have just set up an e-commerce site. It was much more work than I expected.

Why do I say this? I think I came from the wrong perspective. I thought, naively, that I could put an off-the-shelf store up, populate it with goods and products and sit back an watch the orders flood in.

Wrong! So wrong!

If I had to do the same again (which I am planning, actually) I would start off from some guiding principles.

Firstly, i would decide what I was going to sell and to who – what is the product and what age group or style of person was I selling to? Then, sort out the site layout with this in mind. Instead of trying to do it all myself I would enlist, and pay for, the help of someone else. The job would be done much more quickly and effectively – I could then get on and do something else.

The store needs good clean lines and an attractive appearance. Think that YOU were the customer and see everything from the customer's eyes. What I did was ask on a forum for people's views and I was shocked at the responses! That was because I was looking from MY perspective, not theirs. Needless to say, I have made changes – it is still not perfect but it is better than it was.

Dealing with payment processors was fun. Which payments should I take and how do I set them up? If you are like me then you won't have much in the way of IT expertise. So, outsource it – again it will be done much more effectively and experts will tell you things you don't already know (like you need security else someone is going to hack your data or steal the secure data of your customers).

Delivery? Who is going to ship, how often and to where? How much will it cost the customer and how long will it take? The customer needs easy access to this information or else they will leave.

I am still developing my site but hope to be better very soon

5 Ways to Generate Traffic and Exponentially Increase Your Wealth

Are you looking to amass a fortune online? Many have created six figure incomes using the basic principles found in this article. You too can achieve success with the suggestions and ideas presented, with a little ingenuity and some courage to take that first step outside the proverbial box of working for someone else.

Toss logic to the wind and step into the future - your net will appear.

a) use skills you already have to multiply your wealth potential

Stop trying to develop new skills when you already have skills to accomplish your goals. This is not to say you stop learning, only that you branch out a bit and give those duties you haven't learned yet to an assistant while you work on what you do best. Delegate those yucky chores to others, and do what you do best.

b) get others to send you traffic for FREE

Using article marketing to promote your business builds a link network, sending mega traffic your way, without costing you a dime. You create the content, post it on an article site, your content is picked up and used on pro-sites, and you get traffic.

c) get traffic fast even if you're a newbie

Amass traffic fast with high-impact articles that bring quick results. Implanting 25 or more articles at one time, speeds up the process of building traffic. When you want traffic fast, you post many articles all at once.

d) automate your multi-stream systems with content

When you're building a website, you can get some content from other sources. Using content from online providers, means providing links to their sites, but those links increase views of your sites. Often content providers offer free link backs, with a reference to their articles, improving visitor interest in your site.

e) bring instant income streams with secret traffic sources

By using popular products as give-a-ways on your site, you increase your traffic with Search Engine Optimization on other people's products. As traffic increases, your various income streams increase, and you gain momentum as a growing business with viable products.

Move in the direction of power with an energizing step toward building the traffic you desire, and know that you can get where you want to go. It simply requires that you believe, take action and succeed!

Forget The Hype I Can Advise You On Web Promotion Techniques That Work

I have been promoting websites for the last eight years. In this time I have made many mistakes and have also wasted a lot of money in an attempt to market my own and other peoples websites. I now think that I have a very good understanding of what does and does not work and in this article I am going to give advice about the methods of web promotion which do work. I hope this saves people a lot of money by being able to avoid making the same mistakes that I made.

I have just been reading a few of the recent articles which have been written on the subject of website promotion. These people are calling themselves experts with article titles such as "specialist web marketing advice to help people to reach number one in google". At the bottom of the article there is a link to their website, I take a quick look and find that it has a page rank of two and that the site is just crammed full of google adsense links.

Now if these people know so much you would have thought that their website would be at least a pr4 or pr5. The highest page rank any of the authors that I have just been reading about was a pr3. Perhaps they are not as clever as they think when it comes to web promotion.

For me it is quite simple, you need to have a large number of backward links to your website. A lot of people make the mistake of gaining two thousand backward links which consist of a link on pages that have a page rank of zero to four. What you need is a good mixture, a lot of links from zero to four with say thirty pr5 links, five pr6 links, two pr7 links and then one pr8 link. If you can do this, you will be laughing, Now of course obtaining these links is the difficult part.

I will be writing in the near future and have in fact written in the past about the way in which you can obtain these very high value backward links. To obtain the smaller value links is a lot easier and most people who have a website and a little knowledge of web marketing will be aware of these techniques. Gaining a high value backward link is where the specialist advice comes in.

Reputable Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are very popular. The thought of being able to sign up with one and promote somebody else's product and actually make money doing it, is very alluring to many people. Unfortunately, not all affiliate programs are the same. There are some programs out there that fall a bit short of what we would call reputable. However, we don't want to go dragging people through the mud in this article so we will concentrate our discussion on those programs which have proven to stand the test of time.

Probably the most reputable affiliate program on the Internet is Clickbank. The company has been around close to 10 years and has a spotless reputation. They pay people twice every month and in the 4 years that I have been an affiliate for their products, I have yet to not receive a check. Occasionally, they may be a few days later than usual, but they always arrive. Plus, Clickbank probably has one of the largest catalogues of products to choose from, so finding something to sell is very easy.

The great thing about choosing a product to sell through Clickbank is that they give statistics in their marketplace for each product. This way you can see which ones are selling well and which ones not so well. This is very helpful for picking out something to promote. And, unlike a lot of affiliate programs which have high payout minimums, you can set Clickbank's very low.

But Clickbank isn't the only game in town. Another very reputable affiliate program is PayDotCom. While not as large as Clickbank, they do have a nice sized catalogue and there is no minimum payout. You get paid directly to your PayPal account. The one thing you do need to know about PayDotCom is that they do not pay you directly as does Clickbank. PayDotCom affiliates get paid from the actual vendors themselves. So make sure before you sell a vendor's product at PayDotCom that you contact them first to make sure that they are responding to emails. Otherwise, there is a chance that you may not get paid for the sales that you make.

Another reputable affiliate program is Sharesale.com. This company also has a decent sized catalogue. The feature some very popular products such as Amember's affiliate program manager and Infacta's Group Mailer for sending out large numbers of emails at once that all appear to be personalized to each recipient. The one thing you need to know about Sharesale is that they have a rather high minimum payout of $50 and there is no way to change it.

It should be noted that all these programs are free to join. There are certainly other reputable affiliate programs, but these three should be more than enough to get you started. If you want to learn more about affiliate programs, check out the resource in my signature.

Link Directories SEO Power

Link directories have much to do with the way that a search engine helps people find a particular web site, and ultimately, with online marketing. There are a number of reasons why link directories are important, and they should be a part of any webmaster's site marketing strategy. Link directories are popular because they allow you find websites on niche topics. Having your site added in the top directories will allow you gain a great deal of visibility.

Search engines rely on directories as a source of links. Specifically, they rely on link popularity how popular a web site is, based on the quality of both its inbound and outbound links when pointing Internet users to a web site. This is what determines your site's ranking in a search engine when people use certain keywords to get search results. To say that search engines don't need web directories is a fallacy. They both work together seamlessly, and the overall goal is the same: To help people find what they are looking for.

The formula for achieving a high rank may thus seem as simple as using as finding as many keywords as you can in describing or tagging your web site. However, that is not all there is to it. Since search engines rank a web site according to how many other sites link to it, then it would make sense to have your web site added in as many web directories as possible. Having your site add in a large number of web directories does not guarantee success. To succeed with getting your site listed, you will want to focus on the web directories that have the most traffic and popularity.

At the same time, it is important to remember that search engines also look at the quality of a web site's links. Some web directories aim only to build link popularity and will list outbound links without verifying its quality. Such directories are often called link farms, and search engines give low value to sites listed there, if not ban them entirely. This means that a web site added in just one or two directories known to be good, reliable sources of links would get an even better ranking than a site added in several less-known web directories, or link farms. This is how Google ranks its search results, and other search engines have followed suit.

It would also make sense to monitor other sites that link to your site. After all, the quality of the sites that link to yours speaks of the quality of yours as well. You would not want your site to be identified with a low-quality site, and give Internet users the impression that your site is cheap. As a webmaster, your goal should be to make sure your website is only associated with link directories that are high in quality. Avoid getting your site added in just any web directory. It could have an effect on your ranking.

The bottom line is that having your link added in a high-quality web directory is one of the ways by which you can ensure a good ranking in search engine results.

Should I Use Article Marketing Techniques Or Do I Bum It?

Article Marketing is a successful way to acquire traffic for your website. It has become more popular recently especially with the coined term "Bum Marketing." There are differences to each technique, but basically they are both Article Marketing Techniques.

Article Marketing is easy to implement and can be very effective for acquiring free search engine traffic. For the record it is considered off page SEO.

Basically, you write a short 300 to 500 word article on a niche market keyword and add a keyword rich link in your bio box to the website you want to promote. You then submit the article to one of the many article directory sites and anywhere from 2 days to two weeks you should be listed in the search engines.

Repeat the above step a few times with different articles in the same niche as your website with another niche keyword linking back to your website and you will be listed very fast in the search engines.

Bum Marketing is a name that was coined in the last year. It is exactly the same as Article Marketing but with a slight twist.

You would write the same short 300 to 500 word article on a niche market keyword. But, this time you want to use what is called a "long tail" keyword.

This keyword is so exact in its phrasing that usually has very small amounts of searches done using it every month. And, the kicker is that it has very little and sometimes no competition for that keyword. This means that there is practically no website competing to use the keyword. If you are really lucky there is also little to no PPC programs using that keyword.

Long tail keywords are popular now because it is felt that anyone that does search for this type of keyword is a "hungry buyer." It is reasoned that a searcher is looking for a precise item for example "charcoal pre-filter for Honeywell Air Cleaner" instead of using the general keyword, "Air Cleaner."
General keywords are considered hard to convert to sales. A searcher of a general keyword is a so called "tire kicker" who is shopping around but has not made up his mind to buy.

Finally, in the author's bio box of a Bum Marketing article you link directly to the affiliate program you want to promote instead of linking to your website. I think it is similar to the Google Cash promotion method used in promoting via Adwords.

In a nutshell these are the differences between Article Marketing and Bum Marketing. Both are very effective at becoming a successful Affiliate Marketer.

Is Your E-Mail Private? No!

Consider the following three claims:

1. Your e-mail is not private.

2. Your e-mail might not be sent to the intended recipient.

3. Your e-mail can continue to exist even after you delete it.

The following article explains the truth of these alarming statements and why you should be concerned if you're sending confidential messages by e-mail.

1. THE PRIVACY PROBLEM

When you send an e-mail message from computer A to computer B it passes through one or more machines (C, D, E, etc.) on its journey. At each step along the way, an unscrupulous individual with access to the intermediate machine has the opportunity to read -- or even alter -- your e-mail message.

Within a private intranet (i.e. a company network), such privacy violations could occur if:

* IT staff with access to the mail server were unscrupulous;

* unauthorised personnel had access to the mail server (e.g. if someone walked away from the server without logging out); or

* security measures designed to keep hackers out of the mail server were insufficient or were not enforced rigorously.

When e-mail is sent over the Internet (a public network) the risks become notably higher. If you send an e-mail message from Sydney to New York it may pass through half-a-dozen machines on its journey, *each* of which are subject to the risks mentioned above. Thus the hazards accumulate with each extra machine that the message passes through.

2. THE IDENTITY PROBLEM

Another risk with e-mail is that you really don't know who will receive it. This happens because some people choose to forward (i.e. divert) their e-mail to another person or authorise another person to read it for them. For example, if you send a message to a senior colleague, remember that this person's e-mail might be read by his or her secretary or stand-in. That can be awkward.

I know of a case where a manager sent an e-mail report to his CEO describing a clerical officer's poor performance. The CEO had, unfortunately, forwarded his e-mail to his acting secretary, who that day happened to be (you guessed it) the clerical officer in question. The clerical officer read the critical report, and all manner of morale problems ensued.

3. THE DELETION PROBLEM

A further privacy issue surrounding e-mail involves what happens when you delete an e-mail message. You might expect that deleting an e-mail message removes it irretrievably. This is often not the case. though.

In fact, it's a tough job to delete every copy of a piece of e-mail. There are many ways that a "deleted" e-mail message might still be accessible:

1. Daily or weekly backups of the mail server may still contain messages that were subsequently deleted.

2. When you delete an e-mail message, many e-mail programs simply move it to a trash folder, rather than actually deleting it. It's not until you select their "Empty the Trash" command (or similar) that the message is actually deleted.

3. Even after you empty your trash folder, many network-based e-mail programs still archive deleted messages for a period of time before deleting them. During this archival period (30-90 days is typical) the message could be available to unscrupulous or unauthorised individuals.

4. Even after a file is deleted from a computer's hard disk, the information is often still available until that portion of the disk's surface is overwritten with new information. During this period the deleted files could be available to unscrupulous individuals with physical access to the computer.

5. Even if you take steps to avoid all the potential problems above, remember that the e-mail message is probably still available on the PC of the person you sent it to (or who sent it to you).

4. CONCLUSIONS

The moral of this story is clear: e-mail is not a private medium. Don't send messages by e-mail unless you're comfortable assuming that they may be read by people other than the intended recipients.

So next time you go to press that "Send" button, ask yourself "Am I okay with this being seen publicly?" If not, pick up the phone!

3 Indispensible Tools For Successful Affiliate Marketing

The following article is one of a series of articles which focus on Affiliate, Article and Internet Marketing. All of the articles are based on real experiences and research done over twenty years as a personal and business coach. They are also written in response to questions which I have been asked as well as address common challenges that people have with affiliate marketing, article marketing, internet marketing or running an online business in
general. I sincerely hope that you find the following information of value. One idea, one tip, one clue can make all the difference.

3 Indispensible Tools For Successful Affiliate Marketing

What does it take to become a successful Affiliate Marketer? What are the ingredients of an affiliate marketing success story? Is there a shortcut to Affiliate Marketing glory? All these questions play around in the minds of affiliate marketers who want to make it big in this business.

Although affiliate marketing is advertised as one of the easiest and most effective ways to earn money online, it is not as easy as it sounds. The wise affiliate marketer plans every action and executes it the best way he can. He should also maximize the potential to earn by utilizing the right tools necessary for a successful Affiliate Marketing business.

We have consulted some of the most successful affiliate marketers in the business and below are the top three necessary tools for a successful affiliate marketing business.

Important Tool #1: Your Own Website

The most important and indispensable tool in Affiliate Marketing is your own website. The first step in any successful affiliate marketing business is building a good, credible and professional looking website. Your website is the jump off point of all your marketing efforts.

Thus, you must first build a user-friendly website, which will appeal to your prospects and encourage them to click on the links to the products and service you are promoting and make a purchase. Therefore, you must first concentrate your efforts in building a website that will cater to what your prospects need.

The most important thing you should consider is that almost all web users go online to look for information, not necessarily to go and buy something. Above all else, make your website full of original, relevant and useful content. People will love articles that are appealing and helpful.

Keep in mind that, in the internet, content is still king and good quality content will not only build your credibility, it can also help you achieve a higher search engine ranking. By posting relevant and useful articles, you establish yourself as a credible expert in the field, making you a more trustworthy endorser of the product or service you promote. Establishing a good reputation is a necessary step in building up a loyal and buying consumer base.

========SIDEBAR========

Affiliate, Article and Internet Marketing in general isn't as easy as many would have us believe. I fully understand (through my own experiences) that it is a lot easier said than done. However, you are here, right now, because you have a desire to improve your business, grow your business, and be more successful. These articles are here with the sole intention of helping you to make the whole process a lot easier.

======END SIDEBAR======

Important Tool #2: Incentives

Competition is extremely tight in the internet world. You must always be one-step ahead of your rivals to ensure that you capture a significant share of your target market. Therefore, you must use every possible means to encourage people not only to visit your site but also to click and proceed to the websites of the products and services you are promoting.

Building an opt-in email list is one of the best ways to gather prospects. Offer a newsletter or an e-zine. Better yet, offer incentives to your prospects to encourage them to subscribe to your newsletters. You can present free softwares, access to exclusive services and other freebies that will be helpful to your prospects.

Important Tool #3: Link Popularity

The importance of driving highly targeted traffic to your website cannot be emphasized enough. The all-important web traffic is at the top of the list of the most important entities in the internet world. Attracting people to your site should be the first step you should carry out. Do everything to achieve a high search engine ranking.

Link Popularity is one of the factors that search engines use to determine search engine rankings. Therefore, to enhance your link popularity, you must launch an aggressive reciprocal link campaign.

One of the best ways to do this - at no cost at all - is by submitting articles, with your website's link at the resource box, to e-zines and free article sites. You will not only gain exposure, you will also have the opportunity to advertise for free, just include a link back to your site.

The more sites you submit your articles to, the better your link popularity is. Make your articles original, relevant and useful so that more websites will pick it up and post it.

These are but three of the many tools that an affiliate marketer can use to maximize earning potential. The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your imagination, creativity, resourcefulness and determination. You can always explore other ideas and adapt other strategies, which you think might help you become a high rolling affiliate marketer.

NOW is the time!

O.K. you have read the article. Now is the time for action. Without action, this article adds no value whatsoever to your affiliate success. But remember, without action, you cannot blame this affiliate marketing article or any article for that matter. So, take action NOW.

Even if only one piece of advice, one piece of information, one tip makes a difference, then the whole article has been worth it for all of us.

NOW is the time!

How To Get Your Website Listed By The Search Engines In Less Than 48 Hours

A search engine listing is almost an absolute necessity in order to drive traffic to your website. After all, if the search engines do not know where your website is, who does? When promoting your site, it is understandably your goal to drive as much targeted traffic as possible to your site and as quickly as you can.

Did you know that using the website submission form offered by Google will take six weeks just to get your site indexed? Fortunately, there is an easier and faster way.

Getting listed by Google in less than two days can be done without any fancy footwork or shady methods. The key is to utilize the search engines the way they are designed to work. The internet is called "The Web" for a very good reason. Search engines find new websites by visiting websites that already exist in their index. From those sites they follow all of the links in order to visit other sites. Then they will visit those websites and all of the their links and so on. This is called "crawling". Search engines crawl websites in order to find new information to place in their index of search results. Armed with this knowledge, it is simple to get your website indexed quickly.

A very effective way to get your site noticed by the search engines quickly is to write an informative article related to the content of your website and submit your article to the numerous article directories on the internet. You can do a search for "Article Directory". There you can submit your articles free of charge. You can also use an article submission service that will mass submit your articles to scores of article directories for a reasonable fee. Try article marketer as they offer the best value for money. When the spider makes its daily crawl of the article directories, your article with a link to your website will be discovered. Voila, your website got listed.

Another way to get your website listed quickly is to exchange links with a website that is related or similar to your website. You want to approach website owners whose website has a high page rank. The Google Toolbar has an option that shows a websites page rank. Once you have found several websites like this, search the website for the owners contact information. Once you find their contact information send them an email asking if they will link to your website in return for linking back to their website. If you do this correctly and professionally, they will respond and place a link on their website to yours. If you can manage to get 1 PR6 website to link to your website, you should be indexed by Google in less than 3 days. If you can get 1 PR7 website to link to you, in most cases, you will be in Googles' index in less than 24 hours.

If you do not have much luck getting a high ranking website to exchange links with you, there is an alternative. Purchase a link from a high page rank website. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to visit the link purchasing websites. Here are a few of the better ones: text link brokers and text-link-ads. You should be able to purchase a PR7 link for 1 month at $150. After the month is up, there is no need to renew because you are in Googles' index. Needless to say, for something around $150 you can be indexed by Google within 24 hours with no work on your part.

You can also use a more traditional free method like posting in forums. If you choose this route, be careful not to spam. Follow the posted rules, give helpful answers, and do not go overboard on your "signature file". Private forums are not always indexed. Make certain that the forums display recent posts and get listed in search results.

You can also try getting your site mentioned in news releases, and blogs.

As you can see, getting your website indexed by the search engines in less than 48 hours is not a difficult. Using the search engines the way they are designed to work is the quickest and most effective means to obtaining your goal.

Local Marketing Using Google Adwords

In my last article, I went over some basic information about what pay-per-click advertising is and what it can do for you. In this article I will start to go into some specifics on how to increase your you traffic with quality people that are in your target audience.

Effective keywords are the secret to effective pay-per-click advertising. At the risk of a really bad pun, good keywords are the key to your success. A good keyword tool can help you make correct decisions about what keywords to choose. If you are reading this article, then like me you are looking for a free solution to this. One such program is Good Keywords. This piece of software will allow you to, among other things, enter a keyword or key phrase(a series of keywords) and the software will find out how many times they have been searched in the last month, and what other keywords are being searched for in the same category.

In other publications about using Google Adwords you can find out how to get to the tops of some lists by targeting a lesser used keyword. I am going to show you how to get to the top of the list and target only those people you are interested in. This will save you a lot of money, and will increase your CTR(Click Through Rate) and conversion rate drastically if implemented correctly.

Lets say your company makes custom office furniture in Pittsburgh, PA. You use your Good Keywords tool and find that the key phrase office furniture was searched around 179,157 time last month through Overture. You can multiply this number by about 8 for Google. You find that the key phrase custom office furniture was only searched around 712 times. By targeting your specific geographic region you can take advantage the key phrase office funiture without the fear of pumping a lot of money into competing with thousands of companies.

By going back to Good Keywords and entering the key phrase office furniture Pittsburgh we can find out that it was searched 88 times last month. That seems like a small number having looked at the 179,157 there was for office furniture, but these 88 are alot less competitive a market and they are your specific audience.

In the next article I will show you how to take the key phrase we selected and start a Google Adwords campaign to target it. Later in this series we will also focus on how to target geographic specific publications. We will also be going over the specifics of the Adwords interface and how to use it to manage your campaigns.

How to Build Online Traffic

Anyone online knows the most important thing for the success of their website or blog begins and ends with getting traffic. There are numerous ways to get traffic, some free, some expensive. This article looks at some of those ways.

1) Write Articles

Writing a good article and submitted it to an article directory won't automatically get you thousands of visitors, but over the long term there is no better way to generate free traffic. While one article may only get one visitor to your site a day, 100's of articles will result in 100's of visitors. Expand that power by your articles being submitted to RSS feeds and suddenly you can find 1000's of visitors to your site over the space of a year. There are many arguments over whether you should submit articles to just one or two article directories or as many as possible. I believe if your going to take the later option, get an article post robot and submit to 100's. Although it's true google and other search engines tend to ignore duplicate content you will still get the individual readers at each article directory as some readers can be VERY loyal to just one directory. By limiting yourself to one directory you can miss out on some potential readers.

2) Submit to Forums

There are many huge forums out there with thousands of threads. Some even have sharing arrangements for advertising income so your posts might earn you a cent or two. Forums like Digital point can have up to 3,000 people online at anyone time. By including in your signature a couple of links to your site you can get visitors and traffic back to your site. Who knows you might even learn a thing or two or start a buzz about 'this great new site you just have to see'

3) Social Networking

Mybloglog, myspace, and other similar sites have hundreds of thousands of members and can give your sites a wide audience. Make sure you include your links in a short description your sites, businesses, etc.

4) PPC

Pay per click. Costs money but will get you targeted traffic. Especially when you start a site, forum, directory the most difficult part can be convincing your first hundred people to join. Running an adsense campaign or like advertisement can kick start off your site. If you look at any site's Alexa history you will see a J-curve. Every site starts off small - the greatest growth occurs as a function of time, however you can short circuit the length of time by kicking your traffic at the beginning. A hundred dollars spent at the beginning might cut years off the length of time it takes your site to hit the big time.

5) Linking

Link to other sites. Directories, reciprocal links can not only lift your page rank but can bring traffic. Think about it - how long does it take to read the average website. Once the visitor has finished they have a couple of choice normally, get offline, click on the google ad, a banner or a link to another site. Humans like to surf - T.V., internet, whatever - the search for knowledge continues.

This should be enough to get you started. To learn more visit some of the links below.

How to Rank Higher on Search Engines by Getting High Page Rank

It is important for your website to be on good terms with search engines so that you can get organic traffic to your site. And in order to do so, you need to achieve high page rank on your web pages. You are given a high page rank on your pages when search engines find your site valuable, and when you gets the recognition, it shows that you are rank high on search engines, thus given access to free traffic from search engines.

So how does it work? Page rank is transferred through links. The more inbound links you receive from higher page rank sites, the higher your site's page rank will be. Additionally, page rank does not carry over to all pages on your site. For instance, you could have a PR5 home page, but your other pages might be PR3 or not indexed at all.

Another important concept to keep in mind when setting up external links is that they 'bleed' your page rank. This means that linking to too many external sites can actually decrease your own page rank. For this reason, you will want to mitigate the amount of links you put on each page to prevent decreasing your page rank.

In order to receive high page rank, you need to get lots of inbound links pointing to you. Let us look at 3 ways that you can achieve this.

If you have a blog for your website, you will know how sticky and popular it is to get returning visitors. So the first thing you can try is to utilize high rank blogs on the internet to your advantage. Getting links to your site on high page rank blogs is also a good linking strategy. You can do this by making useful, intelligent posts on related blogs, and including your signature with a link pointing to your site. Remember to use your targeted keywords in your anchor text and surrounding text to ensure that your link is given a high relevancy score for your topic.

Viral marketing can also be an excellent tool for getting inbound links. You can do this by sending out surveys, quizzes, and other viral mechanisms, and including a link to your site at the bottom. Every time someone posts the survey, you will get an additional link to your site. This also works for viral videos, which people will have to link to.

Lastly, one of the new and popular ways to get traffic and links to your site is through the use of social bookmarking. Social bookmarking sites, such as Digg, Technorati, and Del.icio.us are high page rank sites that allow bloggers and site owners to submit posts or pages. Not only can this be a good way to increase your natural search engine traffic (by getting a high PR, inbound link), but it can also be a great way to generate more click through traffic.

Just remember that, you need to constantly build links to your site and provide quality content from your site. By achieving a high page rank on your web pages, you are sure to pull in lots of organic traffic from the search engines.

6 Block Formula To Churn Out Non-Stop Free Website Traffic And Links At Rapid-Speed

The most effective way to generate quality free traffic to your website is writing and submitting articles. This is not a secret anymore.

In this article I will give you 6 simple steps you can use right now to write creative articles and distribute them for massive website traffic.

Here YOU GO...

Step 1 - Content Research.

The first step is obvious. You need to research quality content in your niche to write about.

To get topics and to generate ideas you can visit online article directories like ezinearticles.com

Read few articles out there, note down ideas and using these ideas write a killer article of your own. Make sure you donot copy paste articles that others have written, instead read them and get some ideas and then create aricles out of those ideas.

You can even use google.com to do your research work.

Step 2 - Write a Quality Article.

Now that you have an article idea, use the following 5 steps to create a quality article...

1. Headline.

2. Opener.

3. Body.

4. Closure.

5. Resource Box.

The very first thing you need to do is write the body part. Pour everything out of your brain in the body section. Once you have done it create the opener and closure part. This is the article introduction and conclusion section respectively.

The last thing you need to do is create headline. Create a catchy headline that includes benefit for the reader. This is the most important part if you want to get traffic from your article.

Step 3 - Submit Your Article to Article Directories.

Use an article distribution service like 'Article Markter' to submit your website to hundreds of article directories at the push of a button.

Step 4 - Submit Your Article to Your Website and Blog.

Make sure you submit your article to your website and blog. This will make sure that search engines index your articles and start sending you traffic. Also your visitors will return back to check out your new article.

Step 5 - Track Your Article Success.

After few days of your article submission, search your article title in some of the search engines like google, yahoo and msn. This will show you various places where your article has been submitted.

Step 6 - Duplicate the Process.

If one article gets 50 incoming links to your site then to achieve 200 incoming links submit 4 articles using the above 5 steps. The more you do, the more traffic you receive.

The simple truth is, website traffic is a simple numbers game. Make sure you get started today.

Virtual Assistants - Create A New Income Stream In 15 Minutes

Are you using multiple streams of income business model for your virtual assistance business? Instead of only selling your time for money, you should also sell products on your web site. These products could be e-books, audio recordings, special reports and others. The money you can earn by selling these products will allow you work fewer hours while still making money.

Many virtual assistants tell me that they do not want to create their own e-books and audio recordings, but they still want to create multiple streams of income. They still want to work fewer hours while still making enough money and having multiple streams of income.

If you are virtual assistant, who wants to create multiple streams of income, but doesn't want to create your own e-books, special reports and audio recordings is to become an affiliate and sell other people's products. It takes five minutes to sign up for an affiliate program and start using it to make money.

So, what is an affiliate? An affiliate is someone who sells other people's products and receives commissions for every sale. Affiliate marketing involves selling others' products and receiving commissions for every sale.

It is easy to become an affiliate to sell products; all you need to do is join someone's affiliate program. Joining an affiliate program does not cost anything. There are no minimums to sell, so you can sell at your own pace. When you join an affiliate program, you will receive your own unique id you use to link to products you are promoting. You make money by selling products.

There are many products you can sell online through affiliate programs. How can you pick affiliate programs that are right for you? Since you are already working with a target market for your virtual assistant business, I recommend that you pick products that appeal to your target market. It is much easier to sell products to an already existing target market than to start working with a completely new target market. Selling products to your current target market will help you create revenues in the shortest amount of time.

Virtual assistants, remember, even if you do not want to write your own e-book or teach your own teleseminar, you can still create another stream of income in just 15 minutes. To do that, find products that your target market needs and wants, sign up to become an affiliate for those products and start selling those products and earning commissions.

Interview With Avinash Kaushik, Author of Occam's Razor

Sonicko President Jeff Lawrence recently sat down with Avinash Kaushik, author of the popular web analytics blog Occam's Razor about his views on web analytics, what he hopes to see from Microsoft's upcoming web analytics application, and Web 2.0 technologies. Avinash has also authored an upcoming book Web Analytics: An Hour A Day which you can preorder on Amazon.

1. You've been in the field of web analytics for quite some time, did you just wake up one day and think to yourself that this is something that you wanted to do, or were you thrown into the role and simply adapted to it?

At my last job with DirecTV, Sr. Manager for Enterprise Analytics, I had small amounts of exposure to Web Analytics (someone supplied log file parsed numbers into the dashboard). When I interviewed for the job at Intuit (Manager for Web Analytics) I was quite excited about the possibility of taking all my experience in Decision Support and apply it to a 100% exclusive web environment.

There is something so beautiful and scary and challenging and fun about data on the web. It was too hard to pass up. But it would be fair to say that when I took the job at Intuit I had no idea what "web analytics" was, I had not yet had the fortune to have used any web analytics application. Blaire Hansen, my hiring manager, certainly made a huuuge leap of faith in hiring me.

It has been a amazing ride and yes to answer your question I have simply adapted to it, but since my post MBA experience has been almost solely focused on Decision Support Systems I think I have brought all the learnings from traditional data warehousing and business intelligence and applied it to my current role.

2. What problems if any do you foresee with the implementation of Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX and the explosion of tab based browsing? Are you concerned about problems of people keeping tabs open when they are not actively browsing the site?

I have blogged about the fact that slowly but surely the page paradigm is dying. That is not saying that the big problem is that the page view metric is going to be crap. It is more that currently almost all web analytics applications are constructed, from an architecture perspective, on the fact that a page view has to happen and all things go from there.

The challenge with AJAX or Flash or RIA's is that the page view model does not work (remember this is more from a data capture and data analysis perspective). I have blogged about (http://snipurl.com/1al4p) moving to an "event" based data capture and analysis model. The challenge for the web analytics vendors is to change their underlying architectures to accommodate for a event based model and not just try to stuff events into page views because that won't work in the long term.

There is a bigger challenge from Ajax / RIA's for business users. We are used to slapping a tag on the page and expecting most data we need to show up. With web 2.0 we are going to have to think way up front exactly what we want to measure, what is success and then instrument these new experience in Ajax or RIA's to give us the data we need. Most companies and practitioners are not yet prepared for this mental shift.

In terms of tabbed browsing, this simply exposes one more limitation of clickstream data to ultimate actionable insight. Even with tabbed browsing it is hard to make sense of clickstream data. My personal point of view with tabbed browsing the order in which a visitor sees something and follows a "path" is fairly messed up. Depending on how your sessions are initiated in terms of your analytics apps this could also screw up other reports such as referring urls etc.

But it is important to note that if you have a tab open and as long as you are not auto-reloading it, the web analytics application will terminate your session after 30 mins of inactivity and that is not a biggie. Tabbed browsing, and its related impact on clickstream data, is yet another reminder that each website owner should have a mechanism to collect qualitative data (http://snipurl.com/1al54) and to have a Trinity mindset (http://snipurl.com/1al53). Without that they will not truly be able to get actionable insights from their data.

3. What tools, features, and reports would you like to see in the upcoming Microsoft Gatineau product?

Hmm…. I don't think my friend Ian Thomas has quite the luxury to build whatever I want, but let's assume he does. J

I hope that with Gatineau Microsoft figures out exactly who their target audience is and then delivers a tool exactly and specifically just for that audience. Being all things to all people means being nothing to anyone. I guess I am saying I hope their tool does not have a billion standard reports out of the box, just the six that their target audience needs. Atleast initially.

Efficient segmentation. In four clicks (see I am generous!) anyone should be able to segment out traffic from the search engines or from a top referring url /'s or visitors who see x number of pages or come on a particular campaign (whose id is in the url or cookie). It is very hard to dumb down the ability to do intelligent segmentation, yet that is the key to finding actionable insights.

Some useful reporting for Search Engine Optimization. I love free traffic and with all the changes (especially at Google, such as increased "personalization") the PPC gravy train is going to pause. SEO will become more effective at getting the right kinds of traffic yet today most tools pay lip service to the measurement of the results of SEO efforts, all you can do is measure organic traffic and if it goes up (that is hardly a measure of SEO). I hope Gatineau can at least tap into the MSN data and providing efficient reporting for atleast MSN SEO efforts.

Ok maybe I will ask for a reporting feature. I hope that all the reports will show one extra time period by default. For example show eight days in a "weekly" trend and thirteen months in a "yearly" trend. Seems like a small thing but most web analytics tools are not great at giving context, and context is king. If you look at a eight day trend you could compare this Monday to last Monday and get a feeling for if you are doing better or worse this Monday, with most tools you don't see last Monday. Ditto for this month vs. same month last year. It gives context to your past performance and is a "internal benchmark" that can frame current performance. Might not scream answers at you but will get you to ask the right "why" and "what" questions.

There is nothing uniquely Microsoft Gatineau about the above three requests, though if they are really starting with a open mind it might be easier for them to consider requests from random bloggers such as myself.

4. Do you foresee a decline in the major players in the web analytics field such as Omniture and WebSideStory based upon free web analytics packages, or do you believe that they fulfill a niche and will remain?

It is important to realize that I am a practitioner. I am not a vendor, I not a consultant, I am not a analyst from Forrester or Jupiter or any other esteemed organizations. In as much I probably have no idea what I am talking about when I answer this question.

One overall fact to consider is that the web analytics space is growing by leaps and bounds, driven by the fact that the web in general becoming a medium that is increasing been monetized (to huge amounts). At the moment anyone in the field can do great because web analytics is a baby and the there are way too many people who are falling in love with this cute baby. Near term there is hardly a worry on the horizon.

Longer term both Google and Microsoft will prove to be excellent disruptors. If they provide solutions that are value add (rather than being YATR - Yet Another Tsunami of Reports) and keep improving, as their deep pockets would enable them to, then they should own the small to mid sized clients. There is really no need for you to pay for clickstream reporting and some of the always required analysis.

That leaves some of the mid-market and the "high end". These will continue to be with the paid-vendors for some time for a whole host of reasons, for the next couple years at the minimum. After that the paid-vendors that and provide more than clickstream analysis (or indeed web analytics) will thrive (those that enable what I call the Trinity Strategy - http://snipurl.com/1al53). Others will feel perhaps more than bearable pressure from the for free vendors and get squeezed.

In a few years it will be hard to find vendors who will just do traditional web analytics and will be paid for those services. There I have gone out on a limb!

5. We know that you've become quite a football fan, but what else do you do to unwind after a long day besides blogging and answering questions?

By the time I am done with the blogging, and answering atleast twenty fairly detailed emails from the blog readers, it is usually around 0100 hrs and that is rather late! So I unwind by going to sleep. J

With a full time job, the blog, emails from blog readers, the book, speaking engagements and seminars, two small kids and travel required by business it is really tough to find time. No tv for the last year, the super bowl game was the only game I saw all year long (and boy was it nice).

I suppose for me unwinding is writing my blog. It is way more work than I ever imagined (approximately twenty hours a week at least). But when I write I am fully absorbed in writing, I get an absolute thrill when I get comments, it makes me happy beyond reason when I get emails from readers who appreciate the small amount of wisdom that is one the blog. There is no monetization tied to the blog for me (just lots of work!) but it is great feeling that in my own small tiny way I can help someone in Sweden or Iran or Australia or Brazil or Russia or South Africa or Canada or many other places.

I suppose few things are this much work just to "unwind" and few have such delightful rewards.

Secrets of the Big Dogs Program: Is Stan Stuchinski Lying?

Stan Stuchinski's Secrets of the Big Dogs website proclaims,
"YOU!... are about to become a thoroughbred of Internet
Marketing!". Granted, this may simply be an example of
copywriting hype. Certainly it would be easy to argue that
this is a ridiculous statement that has no basis in reality. But
I beg to differ. I believe there is a seed of truth in it.

Of course it is impossible to be transformed from a novice
internet marketer into a professional overnight. Just like a
baby can't go straight from crawling to driving Formula 1
racecars! A baby can only grow so fast. And, to continue
the metaphor, all parents can do is to do their best to guide
their children along a path that leads to them being able to
reach towards their potential. Still, there are no guarantees.
Some children will become successful, and some won't.

So I interpret Stan's words as meaning that following his
path will give you the potential of becoming a professional
internet marketer. This is the seed of truth I was talking
about.

The Secrets of the Big Dogs program teaches fundamental
marketing concepts, such as: testing and tracking, reverse
advertising, copywriting, self-funded leads, upselling,
follow-up, email marketing, automatic leads generation, and
automatic advertising.

These concepts are the fundamentals of effective internet
marketing. The fact that several very successful internet
marketers had successful runs in the Big Dogs program,
is evidence of the solid marketing concepts that the program
teaches. Just to name a few, successful marketers such as Chris
Gibson, Juan Walker, Brian Garvin, Tom Bell, and Miles Baker,
all experienced success with the Big Dogs program.

Still, of course, many people experience failure in the program.
It is a fact that most affiliate marketers fail across-the-board.
Certainly the Big Dogs program is not the right program for
everyone. But everyone has to start somewhere. While the
Secrets of the Big Dogs program may not take practitioners to
the destination they desire, it will put them on the right path.

The Short Guide to Affiliate Website Building Success

There are many ways you can temporarily get an edge on your affiliate competition. At least one internet marketing "guru" invents a new trend every day to help you do this (his/her goal is to sell products). The problem is that these strategies usually don't work, and even if they do, they're only temporary. Eventually, these strategies will hurt your business.

If you're serious about starting a business on the internet, the easiest way to this do is to market affiliate programs. You don't have to be an expert on anything, you don't have to handle customer service, and you don't have to spend a lot of money to get started.

Although there's a lot information about marketing affiliate programs, there are some simple tweaks you can do that will jumpstart your business, and anyone can do them.

Your first step should be to build a website. There is plenty of free software available to help you build a website without knowing HTML, and you don't have to be a genius to learn how to FTP. (This is uploading your site to the internet.)

Most affiliates never succeed in a program because they'll market the program for only 30 days, use only the sales materials the merchant provided, and then they wonder why they aren't rich.

If you want to succeed in any business, affiliate or not, you have to be different. Presell the merchant's products; you can only do that if you have a website.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy either. You can take care of two business tasks at one time by simply building a lead capture page and promoting your list. Include several emails in your series discussing the merchant's program. Explain why it works. Give your reader real information about your topic and not just an endorsement of the merchant's product.

If you're a customer of the program, even better because then you know things about the product most affiliates won't.

You can also use your website as a way of showcasing different merchant programs.

Although you need to avoid using javascript as much as possible because it isn't search engine friendly, many merchant programs, especially on the larger sites like Commission Junction and Linkshare, have additional resources on their own sites you can use. This includes datafeeds and RSS, both search engine friendly types of code you can easily use to add self updating content to your website. This code keeps your website fresh, and the search engines will visit more often.

You'll also find store generators you can use to generate pages for your site, and many of these only require you to add your affiliate ID, some keywords for the types of products you want to offer, and then you just copy and paste the code onto your site. Many of these store generators are now search engine friendly, making your site super search engine food, as well as unique.

You can find store generators by typing in the merchant name and adding the search term "store generator". You can also visit the merchant's site first to find out what tools are offered.

Finally, once you've developed a little technical expertise, and you understand the basics of site building and script installation, you can try your hand at some of the more basic scripts for site building. You can create anything from a full fledged Amazon store, to your own niche friendly Net Shop.

You can search for these scripts by simply typing the store you want into the the search engines, and then add the word "scripts". For example, if you want an Amazon script, type in "free Amazon store script". You'll find plenty of results, and some don't even require a database to run.

Regardless of what type of site you choose to build, whether it's a simple list page, or a full fledged content site, make sure you build a list so you can recycle your traffic. Automation is a key ingredient in a successful business because it allows you to focus on the tasks that will make you money.

Find a few good affiliate programs you like, that pay well, do your keyword research and find an untapped market, and you'll be well on your way to succeeding as an affiliate.
